Beach boy prostitution in Kenya
By Manuel Boissiere
The young men who roam the beach resorts of Kenya to find rich white tourists came seeking more than sun, sea and warm sand, known locally as "beach boys". The majority of the beach boys were about 25 years wear dreadlocks, and tight t-shirts that put their biceps value. They go to a white woman and asks her what she needs, if she is looking for a guide, they will be her guide, so if she wants to go jet-skiing or out on a boat, they will accompany her If she wants something else, like sex. then she can also get it from them. Although no official estimate of the number of women attending each year in Kenya to sexual tourism, this figure is rising steadily, according to the local population. In 2007, Kenya has received two million tourists, mostly from the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany. Many beach boys speak not only English and Swahili (the local language), but a command of German and Italian, languages learned after years spent in contact with tourists. As Adongo said, the mastery of a European language gives an advantage in the competition. Revenues come mostly from the commission they get from expensive restaurants where they bring tourists , to excursions, and from those who leave money at the end of their stay. "If they meet a generous tourist, the beach boy will stay with her at her hotel and when she goes, she may leave about 60,000 shillings (900 U.S. dollars), but sometimes less. During the high tourist season, like summer, A beach boy may have up to five or six different sexual partners. In addition, it is recognized that most women with whom he will have sexual intercourse will be more than 60 years old. When a beach boy has sexual has relations with tourists, it is the latter that determine the use of condoms. "If she wants me to use a condom, I do, if it does not, I do not," said one of them. "At first, I usually always use one, then after a few days, I stop. " this beach boy has never been tested for HIV and said that he preferred to believe that the person with whom he has sex is negative. "Most whites are HIV negative, HIV is very rare in these countries," he said. There are organizations working with with sex workers in Mombasa, in general, the beach boys are not treated as sex workers and are therefore not taken into account in the the messages of HIV / AIDS. SOLWODI deals with sex workers, and although they wants their programs to also target beach boys, They lack resources. Associations of people involved in tourism activities such as crafts, water sports or camel rides, are sometimes organized enough to conduct training on HIV prevention. However, people like Adongo, who operate alone, won't have access to these courses. Whether in the general community or NGOs, the beach boys are not treated the same way as sex workers but given the threat of HIV to which the beach boys are exposed, the awareness messages should be made available to them. |

I think you've just given tourism to Kenya an inadvertent boost.

Thank you for sharing this very interesting yet troubling story, Manuel. Adults are free to do as they see fit or not, but HIV/AIDS are not casual social diseases. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
